Devana Systems Ltd Selects ViaSat to Develop Encrypted Data Storage for Merlin Helicopter
UK-certified encryption hardware adapted for new application

ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq:VSAT) has been selected by Devana Systems Ltd to design and develop an encrypted data storage solution for the Merlin rotary platform. The ViaSat solution will enable high capacity, secret transport of data recorded on Merlin sorties. The 3.5” encrypted HDD will utilise a USB 3.0 interface to enable rapid download of data from the platform and will ensure that system data is fully protected, meaning that it can be securely collected, stored and analysed.

“Information is the most important weapon of the 21st century battlefield,” said Chris McIntosh, CEO of ViaSat UK. “Given Merlin’s role as a direct support platform, being able to guarantee that sensitive mission data is not at risk once downloaded from the vehicle is essential. By combining our UK government-accredited hardware encryption technology with experience gained in other highly successful air and ground vehicle projects we can help provide peace of mind for those using Merlin that their data is not at risk.”

ViaSat has developed the only hardware based data encryption technology that is CAPS approved by CESG, the accreditation arm of the UK government, for the protection of Top Secret data at rest[1]. By customising this technology it can provide a system suited to the needs of the Merlin platform, without the need for an extended development lifecycle.

“The UK armed forces continue to operate in an extremely challenging environment: reducing costs while also ensuring they have the capability and security they need remains essential,” continued McIntosh. “Platforms such as Merlin will form an important part of meeting this challenge.”
