Technology -> Personal Productivity
Released: 18th October 2013
A pilot project designed to empower and inspire mothers by introducing them to the technology skills they need in today’s digital world has been so successful that organisers plan to extend it to seven other schools. Already one mother has been offered a new job because of skills learnt on the #techmums (techmums.co) programme.
“I am so grateful for the course. As a direct result of #techmums training, I have landed a new job which includes keeping an eye on the company's social media site,” says Thelma Othieno, explaining how the course has made a positive impact on her life. In fact, academic research following the pilot has shown that it has improved the confidence and understanding of all those taking part.
The #techmums pilot, supported by Raspberry Pi, Apps for Good, e-skills and the Intellect Technology Association, took place at Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School, Tower Hamlets during summer 2013. It included five two-hour workshops in a variety of tech areas, including social media savviness, online safety, basic computer skills, app and web design. Those attending also had the opportunity to try programming on a Raspberry Pi. They were awarded an accredited e-skills certificate at the end of the course.
Following this success, Savvify, a social start-up set up by Dr Sue Black, the driving force behind #techmums, has launched its first crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo igg.me/at/techmums to further extend its #techmums programme in Tower Hamlets.
Dr Sue Black says: “We know that #techmums can deliver life-changing opportunities. We want to offer more women in Tower Hamlets the chance to benefit so they can make the most of the technology opportunities available to them for them and their children.
“Mothers tend to be the main influencers in the family, by inspiring them and improving their tech skills we hope they will also inspire the rest of the family. Understanding technology has changed my life, giving me a career I am extremely proud of. As a mum of four wonderful children, I am really excited about the prospect of offering this opportunity to others.’’
