More Oxfordshire Villages Say No To Go-Slow Broadband

Released: 6th December 2012

6 December 2012, Oxfordshire Gigaclear, a provider of ultrafast fibre optic broadband to rural communities, is to install a 1000 Mbps (one Gbps) network to the Oxfordshire villages of Fyfield and Tubney. Frustrated by local network speeds as low as one Mbps, local residents and businesses have commissioned Gigaclear to provide them with world-class connectivity. Work will begin in December 2012 and take just three months to complete.

Steve Fraser, resident and clerk of the parish council explains, “Broadband speeds to properties in the villages are influenced by the distance from the telecoms cabinet, the quality of the copper wire, the time of the day and even the weather. Degradation of service is frustrating for everyone and can make it impossible for those wanting or needing to work in the area. Local businesses are part of the life-blood of villages like Fyfield and Tubney, so when the communities came together to celebrate the Jubilee earlier this year it was decided something had to be done for everyone’s sake.”

The all-fibre network will make Fyfield and Tubney two of the best connected communities in the world along with the Oxfordshire villages of Appleton and Eaton where a similar network was completed last month.

Gigaclear, chief executive, Matthew Hare comments, “We are seeing growing demand for ultrafast all fibre optic broadband from rural communities across Oxfordshire and, indeed, the UK. Expectations are justifiably high so we work closely with residents and businesses to ensure the process is a simple one and benefits are realised. For residents, benefits might include the chance to increase their free time, reduce the need to commute, and save money through internet telephony, and Internet based film and music services. For businesses or home workers ultrafast broadband can be transformational.  Overall the whole community benefits from better broadband.

Gigaclear serves communities that are not currently served or ‘planned to be served’ by a high-speed broadband provider. To qualify communities must comprise at least 400 properties and 30 per cent of the community must sign up. For further information see www.gigaclear.com/can-i-get-it
