Guavus Inc., a leading provider of big data analytics solutions that enable service providers and enterprises to make intelligent and timely business decisions, today announced that Professor Magda Balazinska of the University of Washington and Professor S. “Muthu” Muthukrishnan of Rutgers University have joined Guavus’s Technology Advisory Board. Muthukrishnan and Balazinska’s expertise will be a valuable resource as Guavus continues to evolve its Reflex platform and applications to support a rapidly growing and complex enterprise data landscape.

Balazinska is an associate professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. She received her PhD from MIT, where her research focused on the distributed stream-processing engine Borealis. Along with its predecessor Aurora, Borealis brought to light many concepts relevant to Guavus, including how to apply traditional database operators like Aggregate and Join to data streams. Balazinska has also worked on a variety of problems related to cluster-based (Hadoop) systems, including how to improve the performance of skewed workloads and ways to optimise iterative data processing.
Muthukrishnan is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University. Among other disciplines, he is an expert in stream algorithms, including strategies for summarising data streams using small amounts of memory. Over the course of his engagement in the commercial side of big data analytics, Muthukrishnan has contributed to the design of AT&T’s Gigascope and Daytona systems as well as the design of Google’s advertising systems.
