The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concept of breakthrough applications in more detail. The historic requirements for these elements of a solution remain valid but there are additional functions that will be needed to support breakthrough applications. Finally, we will consider how one software technology vendor in particular, InterSystems, meets those requirements for supporting breakthrough applications.
