GlassHouse Technologies Enables Organisations To Become Greener And Save Money

Released: 14th July 2009
Publisher: GlassHouse Technologies

GlassHouse Technologies, a leading independent IT infrastructure consulting and services firm, today announces the expansion of its green services to include the Energy Proficiency Impact Analysis (EPIA). The new service offered in collaboration with two GlassHouse partner companies, Rackwise and Fortress International Group (formerly Total Site Solutions), improves IT efficiencies and helps companies address the Government's plans to turn Britain into a low-carbon economy, cutting the UK's carbon emissions by 34 per cent by 2020 and by 80 per cent by 2050. The EPIA identifies changes that can be made to streamline IT infrastructure in line with necessary green targets, without sacrificing mission-critical business operations.

Growth in data centre operations due to mergers and acquisitions as well as business demand require IT executives to provide more services and support, including hardware and software to the business, but limitations in the data centre's physical space as well as constraints on power and cooling create difficulties. GlassHouse's new EPIA enables enterprises to address these concerns head on, offering insight into what inefficiencies may be causing greater emissions as well as cost-effective solutions and testing options to help ensure they support Government targets.

The EPIA provides two strategic analysis reports, the Green Proficiency Analysis (GPA) and the Cost Proficiency Analysis (CPA) designed to help organisations identify where changes need to be made to address green inefficiencies and ensure they take the necessary measures to reduce emissions and energy consumption. These reports are powered by the RACKWISE Data Center Manager software. The "Green" dashboard is useful in quickly communicating the "Green" status of a data centre using the Green Grid's metrics. Cost/Savings Analysis functionality determines the financial impact of proposed data centre changes. In addition, customers received a breakdown of the cost-impact these changes will have on overall operations.

Through a five-step process, the GPA provides a current state analysis of the environment and offers recommendations on how to achieve a more efficient, greener IT environment based on metrics established by The Green Grid. Further, the GPA allows enterprise to test changes before implementation to ensure they will not negatively impact mission critical operations. Based on the recommendations outlined in the GPA, the CPA then validates the financial savings of these changes and shows a breakdown of when organisations can expect to see financial ROI from the new, greener practices.

"RACKWISE is proud to support GlassHouse as part of this Green and Cost Savings initiative. Helping companies get a clear understanding of the "Green" data centre, and the enormous cost savings that come from optimisation is a core component of data centre strategy today," said Dom Lesme, VP and General Manger of RACKWISE.

In addition to the Energy Proficiency Impact Analysis, GlassHouse offers customers a way to measure their carbon footprint before and after a data centre project. The results provide IT and business leaders with concrete metrics by which they understand how their data centre is impacting the environment. In a recent server virtualisation project for a major pharmaceutical company, GlassHouse's team consolidated over 1,400 servers down to just 700, reducing power and cooling costs by over 40%. The resulting carbon footprint impact is equivalent to taking over 4,000 cars off the road, or planting 2.1 million trees.

"In this challenging economic environment, organisations are looking to cut costs across their IT environment, especially in the data center where power and cooling have become a major expense," said Mark Shirman, CEO of GlassHouse Technologies. "GlassHouse is committed to working with customers to reduce these costs by rationalising their infrastructure environments, thereby saving money and also reducing their carbon footprint."

Further demonstrating its commitment to the practice of green initiatives, GlassHouse has made major strides to improve their own carbon footprint. GlassHouse recently provided the employees in its Israeli office with electric cars to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Additionally, Mr. Shirman recently contributed to a book titled "Inside the Mind of a CEO" where he outlines specific green initiatives companies can employ to make a positive impact on the environment, demonstrating his expertise and passion for the green movement.

Added Shirman, "GlassHouse believes very strongly in furthering the advancement of green technologies, initiatives and practices. Therefore, we are continually looking for new ways to help both our customers and employees live greener lives that will help improve the overall state of the environment."
