Leighton Hospital, part of the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust, is upgrading its labelling software from Episys, the global information technology solutions and services company, to further increase the safety of its patients. The upgrade follows the hospital’s attendance at a recent NHS study day workshop hosted by Episys.
The Aseptic Unit of Leighton Hospital, which manufactures over 500 sterile products a month including intravenous nutrition and chemotherapy drugs, is upgrading its labelling software to include the Episys Worksheets module. This means that both the label and the worksheet needed for each drug can be printed concurrently, therefore reducing risk of error and increasing patient safety.
The new module has a wealth of design capabilities including the ability to include colour, which the Aseptic Unit will use to clearly highlight the properties of the drugs. The system also allows products with more than one label associated with them, to be linked, which reduces the risk of missing something when manually pairing labels, such as safety warnings.
Cathy Samsudin, Technical Services Manager, Leighton Hospital said, “After attending the Episys study day workshop, we decided to revamp the structure of our labelling procedure. We’ve been extremely happy with the labelling software from Episys in its own right so it seemed only natural to incorporate the Worksheets module with our primary focus being on patient care and wellbeing.”
Episys is instilling best practice in the industry by holding further study day workshops as well as its annual conference for healthcare professionals with the view to educate and further understanding of available technology and industry compliant upgrades.
Derek Buchanan, CEO of Episys says, “Patient safety is at the heart of every hospital’s ethos and we are delighted to assist Leighton Hospital with the integration of the Worksheets module which aims to reduce labelling errors and increase efficiency. Our study day workshops which staff from Leighton attended are a chance for healthcare professionals to share best practice and discuss every day challenges and how the latest technology can solve problems.”
Leighton Hospital is another NHS trust that has applied the Episys solutions successfully to ensure accuracy and quality within their systems. Other trusts include St. George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital NHS Trust, Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, NHS Tayside, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, East Kent NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
