The Pharmacy Production Department of the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UH Bristol) has selected Episys, the global information technology solutions and services company, for medicines documentation and labelling. Medicines must be documented and labelled with precision and quality according to UK regulation.
Medicines manufactured and prepared by the Pharmacy Production Department under a MHRA 'specials' or Investigational Medicinal Product (IMP) manufacturing license are supplied both within the Trust and externally.
Ross Walker, Pharmacy Production Manager, UH Bristol says, "The Episys system we have selected will be used for the documentation and labelling of a wide range of pharmaceuticals manufactured in our Pharmacy Production Unit. These products will be supplied to local patients to allow us to produce medicinal products that meet individual needs of our patients and allow us to provide the best possible care".
Business Process Automation is a key component of Ultimate™ Platinum that can be used to automate manual business processes which can be event driven. Ultimate™ can therefore take data from any number of data sources within an event and apply workflow management in applications such as ensuring labels go through the correct approval process before being output to label printers, which is a key aspect of the Episys solution that will be used in the Pharmacy Production Department of UH Bristol.
In addition, UH Bristol will also use the Pharmacy Worksheets Module, which is part of the Ultimate™ solution. This module allows the Pharmacy Production Department to produce both the batch manufacturing record and associated labels as part of the same print process. This will reduce transcription errors and increase consistency across the batch documentation process.
Ultimate™ Platinum is Medicines & Health Regulatory Agency and Food & Drug Administration (US) compliant and developed to Good Automated Manufacturing Practice (GAMP) standards.
Walker continues, "Day-to-day work will be made simpler and more efficient with errors and mistakes reduced as the result of a tailored labelling and documentation solution provided by Episys. Reporting, documentation control and quality will all be improved from our current system as well as ensuring ongoing compliance with GAMP and the MHRA. We also look forward to the new legislation on falsified medicines that is due to become law in January 2013 as we now have a solution that enables us to become compliant with this legislation as well."
Derek Buchanan, CEO of Episys says, "Our commitment and ethos of accuracy and quality fits very well with what the Pharmacy Production Department at UH Bristol are providing to patients and staff alike. Because the Ultimate range of solutions are MHRA approved it does make it an excellent way for NHS Trusts to ensure that information going onto medicines is correct and according to standards set by regulations."
UH Bristol is another NHS trust that has applied the Episys solutions successfully to ensure accuracy and quality within their systems. Other trusts include St.Georges Healthcare NHS Trust, Guys and St.Thomas Hospital NHS Trust, Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, NHS Tayside, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, East Kent NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
