Crime Reduction Initiatives (CRI), one of the UK’s largest charities specialising in recovery from substance abuse, has successfully created a new health and safety infrastructure based on Datix incident management software. Since deploying the Datix Incidents module in May 2012 followed by the Risk and Dashboard modules in September last year, CRI has been able to capture an even greater range of incidents that go beyond traditional health and safety occurrences.
Automation has enabled staff and volunteers to respond more quickly and efficiently to nearly 3 million contacts from service users every year. In addition, the flexibility of Datix has enabled CRI to support recent changes in the Government agenda as it aims to promote a culture of self-help.
Prior to implementing Datix, CRI relied on a manual/paper based process to report incidents in line with Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences (RIDDOR) and other Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines. As incident types diversified and the charity grew larger and more dispersed, CRI required a more robust, automated solution to replace the existing system.

CRI reports the biggest benefit of using Datix has been the trend analysis made possible by the accurate and real-time data held in the system. This gives staff the evidence they need to root out problems quickly and liaise with the appropriate partner agencies or statutory bodies to prevent them from happening again.
Phil Pinnington added, “The benefits of automation far outweigh our previous paper based system. Accessibility to accurate, real-time information adds a totally new dimension. Operationally and strategically, Datix has given us a valuable tool that promotes improved decision-making and fosters a more meaningful partnership with our external stakeholders.”
CRI has recently been awarded OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Standard accreditation, an achievement that reflects the charity’s steadfast commitment to continuous improvement. With Datix’s support and technical innovation, CRI looks forward to developing its best-practice health and safety framework even further.
