Medway Hospital achieves new levels of efficiency with Episys Ultimate™

Medway Hospital, is benefitting from an upgrade of its Ultimate™ labelling system supplied by Episys, a global information technology solutions and services company, through greater accuracy of labels, a 50% cut in label production time and greater clarity of the indications for patients.

The Ultimate™ software is used to prepare labels for all aseptically prepared items within the hospital. The implementation of Ultimate™ has improved the clarity and security of the labels of all aseptically prepared products including prefilled syringes and IV Bags. The quality of the documentation system and the audit facility as well as the pass word protection facility makes the system safer, efficient and traceable.

Khalid Abdalla, Pharmacy Aseptic Services Manager at Medway Hospital, said, “We use the Ultimate™ system for all named patient aseptically prepared products for patients during their stay at the hospital when these patients are receiving any antibiotics which are prepared in the Aseptic Unit. Also it is used for labelling Total Parenteral Nutrition bags and syringes for adults, Paediatrics and Neonates. But by far the most common use is for the labelling of cytotoxic drugs for the treatment of Cancer patients through the day clinic as well as inpatients. Since the upgrade, the quality of the labels produced has improved a lot and the time we spend producing  labels has been reduced dramatically. But the most important aspect of this upgrade is that the risk of errors has been reduced considerably.”

Abdalla continued, “We like the fact the system is straight forward to use and easy to train staff to use it. Our Unit on average produce up to 50 patient work sheets per day, these acts as our audit trail for the production process, so it is vital we have these in place with all the correct information listed. We are looking forward
to using our Ultimate Worksheet upgrade in the near future to help us bring the savings we achieved with the Labelling aspect into work sheets.”

Derek Buchanan, Chief Executive Officer at Episys, said, “Ultimate™  is fast becoming the de facto standard for labelling in the UK national health system, because the  many hospitals that use it share their experiences, which in turn ensures that it delivers to the highest possible standards.”
