The need for businesses to adopt secure print solutions is the focus of a Nuance-sponsored white paper published by research and analyst company Quocirca. Entitled ‘Printing: a false sense of security?’ the whitepaper outlines why and how private and public sector organisations must ensure their printing is secure in order to safeguard sensitive company or client information. The paper comes at a time when organisations are increasingly streamlining workflows associated with paper-based documents – either for efficiency, legal or environmental reasons – and the office Multi-Functional Printer (MFP) and networked printer is playing a greater role in helping them achieve their document-related goals. Despite the greater reliance on MFPs and their role in the document lifecycle, many businesses leave themselves exposed to potential data breaches, according to Quocirca’s research. It shows that only 22% of businesses* have implemented secure printing. This points to a low level of awareness for the need to secure printing which, in part, explains why 63% of businesses surveyed by Quocirca admit to experiencing one or more print-related breaches, even though organisations are increasingly aware of the damage that can be done to their reputation and customer trust through the misuse or loss of sensitive data.
The white paper explains that while the greater reliance on MFPs can expose security weaknesses – either policy or device-related - these can be countered by implementing secure printing practices to close the print security gap. It also recommends that print security must form part of the company’s wider information security strategy, in order to mitigate the risk. To illustrate this, the white paper features two case studies explaining how companies in the public and finance sector have used Nuance’s Equitrac and SafeCom solutions to address the issue of securing print.
