EMC Data Domain has extended the capabilities of its in-line deduplication appliances, which typically reduce data backup storage by around 95%, to gain greater savings when replicating to remote locations over a wide area network (WAN). In this paper, Bloor looks at the capabilities and functionality of EMC Data Domain Replicator software; it considers its potential and the implications of the Data Domain infrastructure being absorbed into that of the $15bn EMC Corporation.

Bloor believes this will be of particular interest to organisations with regional data centres and remote offices from which data needs to be collected centrally and those who want to extend their remote replication to achieve greater data protection, including disaster recovery (DR), but are concerned about the cost and/or performance impact.
