Dublin, Ireland - September 30, 2009 - Digital Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: DLR), the world's largest wholesale data center provider, has announced that it will be speaking at the Gartner Data Center Summit on the importance of total cost of ownership within data center planning. TCO is the aggregation of all the costs associated with the building and operating of a data center over a period of time, and is too often misunderstood or underplayed when creating data center strategies. Jim Smith, chief technology officer at Digital Realty Trust, will illustrate the discussion with different data center models, including DIY, custom builds and Turn-Key Datacenters®.
The presentation will explain the range of elements to be considered and pitfalls that need to be avoided when developing a TCO model. Drawing on a wealth of experience within the industry, and the shared knowledge of his colleagues and customers at Digital Realty Trust, Jim will help outline the range of challenges data center decision makers face. Amongst these is due consideration to appropriate accounting treatments for such large assets - from capital costs and cost of funds to depreciation charges and ascribed value at end of term. He will also present the forgotten cost considerations that fall under real estate expenses such as taxes and charges. The concerns Jim raises will feed into an overall understanding of how to undertake a robust risk assessment which considers all factors from total cost to time of project completion.
