IT is fundamentally changing. An independent survey with 100 IT managers showed that 95 per cent believe the IT role has transformed over the past twelve months, most notably into a more strategic role.
Software solution specialists, MSM Software, commissioned the independent survey by Dynamic Markets asking 100 IT managers (middle manager level and above) in large UK-based organisations with 250+ employees. The survey gauged their opinions on the evolving role of IT departments and the research sample was split between the financial services (60 interviews) and third sectors (40 interviews).
The change in strategic focus has revealed that 46 per cent think the required skillsets for staff has changed and consequently, 40 per cent of IT managers no longer have sufficient resource available to support business-critical systems.
With IT taking centre stage and the demands on the department increasing, this strain has left IT teams at breaking point – and there does not look to be any let up in sight. However with 41% of respondents seeing an increase in IT outsourcing, the survey does show that IT departments are embracing new IT strategies to meet the long term objectives of the business. In addition to outsourcing, the infographic highlights additional strategies which organisations can use to manage the faster pace of technological change, such as:
- Taking advantage of flexible resourcing.
- Ensuring IT systems are fit for purpose.
- Renewing investments in technology.
Thomas Coles, managing director of MSM Software said: “Demands on the IT department are increasing which is leaving IT teams at breaking point. If IT functions cannot drive forward technology innovation then organisations across the UK will be put at great risk”.
He continued by saying that “to maintain competitive advantage, organisations must embrace new IT strategies to meet the long-term objectives, whilst ensuring that the departments are not spreading themselves too thin”.
“As IT becomes more strategic, organisations must support their teams with adequate resource and robust IT systems that are fit for purpose. There also has to be a commitment to on-going investment”.
