RES Software Provides Fast-Track to Windows® 7

Released: 8th October 2009
Publisher: Goode International

RES PowerFuse™ simplifies migration of users to the new operating system with greater control over end-user settings with Windows 7 Migration Pack

IPExpo (stand number 860), LONDON, OCTOBER 7th, 2009 – RES Software, the leading provider of User Workspace Management software, today announced enhanced support for Windows 7 migrations with the availability of RES PowerFuse 2008 SR7, enabling companies to accelerate the transition of users to the new Windows operating system. Also announced was the availability of RES Software PowerFuse Windows 7 Migration Pack, a pack consisting of RES PowerFuse MyWorkspace Edition and RES Wisdom™ to enable an automated approach to moving users to the
new Microsoft operating system.

RES PowerFuse 2008 SR7 allows organisations to side step the process of having to manually reapply a user’s personalised settings when provisioning the new desktop environment, delivering significant time and cost savings. In particular, it provides a smooth migration path for companies upgrading from Windows® XP to Windows 7, helping them to avoid the incompatibility challenges of moving users between the two systems. It fully integrates with Microsoft’s new Taskbar, Jump Lists and recent documents per application.

RES Software will demonstrate the solution as part of its award-winning User Workspace Management software, at the VM 09 Expo (stand 860), on 7-8th October at Earls Court, London. According to an IDC research paper, around 50% of all business users will be using Windows 7 before the end of 2010, while Gartner predicts that half of large organisations will move directly from Windows XP to Windows 7, skipping Windows® Vista entirely.

Bob Janssen, CTO RES Software: “We expect a large number of companies will move to Windows 7 and as with any migration, they will want that transition to be as quick and easy to manage as possible. With RES PowerFuse, IT administrators can greatly simplify the process of supporting users, and ensure personalised and secure workspaces are maintained as the underlying operating system changes.”

Support for Microsoft Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008 R2) will be available in Service Release 7 (SR7) of RES PowerFuse 2008, which is scheduled for October 7, 2009. RES Wisdom, the company’s run book automation for Windows product already supports Windows 7 with the introduction of Service Release 3 (SR3), which was made available September 28, 2009.

RES PowerFuse enables organisations to centrally manage an end user’s “personal” workspace – the unique combination of personal desktop settings, security, and administrative profile – separately from the user’s underlying applications, systems software, and hardware. It makes the process of re-applying settings to a new desktop environment simple, ensures compliance, minimises the impact of change on the user and saves money.

Whether the desktop is VDI (virtual desktop interface) or server-based, Windows XP or Windows 7, streamed or traditionally managed, RES PowerFuse gives users their own personalised desktop where and when they need it, with their own settings always available. It makes it easy to create a tailor-made experience for the duration of the user’s session from a central administration point. This increases end-user productivity and satisfaction even through a major infrastructure change like a desktop migration.

More details can be found in this whitepaper available here.

The RES PowerFuse Windows 7 migration pack is available immediately. Pricing starts at £30 RRP per user.
