According to a report produced by CB Insights and IPO advisors Orrick, between 2008–12 VC firms pumped around $5bn of venture capital into Big Data technology vendors. The first half of 2013 alone saw a further $1.3bn of venture funding into the market. We all know that Big Data is Hot, and these are just two more data points to support that.
What this also means, of course, is that the Big Data technology vendor landscape is itself ‘Big’, according to the characteristics many people use when describing Big Data (velocity, volume, variety). It’s a vendor landscape populated by a fast-growing, fast-changing and diverse selection of technology vendors. All this might be great for VC firms, but what it gives enterprises looking to uncover latent business opportunities and overcome thorny business challenges with Big Data is one big headache.
Perhaps the answer is to invest in a Hadoop distribution? Well, maybe—but maybe not. And which Hadoop distribution? Which libraries?
Maybe you need to take the NoSQL route. Maybe—but do you need a columnar data store? A key-value store? Perhaps a graph or a document database platform?
And does it make sense to go for an in-memory platform? Maybe a cloud-based platform?
Don’t forget that the boundaries and options are shifting around all the time. What might look like a good decision now might end up meaning you’ve painted yourself into a corner by next year.
I’ve been researching the Big Data vendor and technology landscape. There’s myriad different use cases, but they do tend to fall into some repeatable classifications—which, in turn, tend to map onto particular clusters of technology capability. Yes, there are some at the extremes of scale and speed, but outside of these extremes there’s a large part of the landscape which you can think of as “Big Data for the rest of us”… more mainstream scenarios, potentially satisfied by more mainstream offerings (without so many of the challenges of niche vendor integration).
Of course where you fit in all of this depends on your data, your situation, and your skills. If you hold off on a decision you could miss potentially game changing data leverage; if you rush into a decision you could easily over-engineer a platform or lose sight of the business challenge you’re trying to address.
