Analyst Profile
Rob Bamforth

Rob Bamforth

Principal Analyst
Quocirca

Rob Bamforth is a Principal Analyst working with Quocirca Ltd, focussing on the areas of service provision and mobility. His experience couples a number of years he has spent in sales and marketing, with an in-depth understanding of technology deployment and service delivery, which together give him an approach that focuses first on the business need, with technology as the supporting service.

The areas of service provision and mobility are broad, but have significant overlap, and together include many of the issues arising from the convergence occurring in the IT and telecommunications industries - voice and data, fixed and mobile, content and service. Rob's perspective is on the business impact from large enterprise to SME; he also identifies with the needs of service providers in dealing with all their customers, including consumers.

Rob is regularly quoted in both technology and mainstream business media and is a regular contributor of analytical content to The Register and silicon.com. During his career he has actively promoted the business benefits of emerging technologies such as the Internet and Java. Rob has presented at innumerable industry events, as well as working closely with standards bodies.

A technical foundation with early experience in applications as diverse as life insurance, aircraft control systems, fingerprint recognition and computer aided design, has provided Rob with an analytical ability to quickly identify the practical realities of any product or service. To this Rob adds a solid commercial background based on over a dozen years of sales and marketing experience at Sun Microsystems.

Rob subsequently joined the analyst community, establishing the wireless and mobile practice at Bloor Research prior to extending his interest in the impact of the convergence, or as he would rather say, 'collision' of IT and Telecommunications industries with his work at Quocirca.

Rob is an accomplished DIY-er, having successfully tackled everything from replacing kitchens, bathrooms and windows, to re-plumbing and re-wiring an entire house - but he hates grouting tiles. He is also a keen photographer and student member of the British Institute of Professional Photography. Formal qualifications include BSc (Hons) in Systems Engineering in 1981 from Bath University in the UK, with membership of the British Computer Society and Chartered Engineer status since 1992.
