Martin is a creative, collaborative and entrepreneurial businessman and a proactive fund-raiser, often doing charity runs and bike rides, and is also on the UK Board of Directors for global educational charity ‘Right to Play’.
A former banker in the 1980s, having worked as Director of GNI Fund Management and at Goldman Sachs and Kleinwort Benson PLC, Martin became disillusioned by the consolidation and culture within the industry. At around the time that he was considering his options, his old school friend Nigel Steljes got in touch to ask him to join the management team of his new business venture.
Martin joined Steljes as Financial Director in June 1996, became Managing Director in March 2003, and Group Chief Executive when the company evolved in July 2005. Today, the company has revenues of £57m.
Martin has grown SMART Technologies’ total UK market share to 58 percent, shipping over 350,000 whiteboards to customers nationwide. His main objective for Steljes has always been to grow as a successful and well-respected company that genuinely makes a difference and, under Martin’s leadership, the one-time projector distribution company has built a strong reputation and business model in both the Education and Corporate markets that set the company apart from its competition.
Steljes identifies disruptive technologies, develops a context for broad consumption and then helps customers take full advantage of the opportunities that technology can offer. The company is also expanding its influence into other markets, such as the military, corporate and public sectors.
Martin has a degree in Law and Economics and is qualified as a certified accountant.
