Dr Russel Winder

Partner
Concertant

Russel Winder has over 25 years experience in the IT industry focusing on software, particularly with respect to parallel systems. He has been involved in the development of software and has board-level experience in its strategic management.

Initially a particle physicist using computers, he became more interested in the software and its development process than the physics itself.

From 1983 to 1996, he was a member of staff at University College London (UCL) where he taught programming and software engineering. His research focused on the processes of software development and of programming languages and notations for parallel systems. He was a joint leader of the SPAN and UC++ projects which addressed parallel processing. During this time, he was the UCL representative on the management board of the London Parallel Application Centre.

From 1997 to 2001, he was Professor of Computing Science at King's College London and, from 1999 to 2001, was Head of the Department of Computer Science. During this period he continued his research into parallel systems (KC++ language work) as well as starting initiatives in medical informatics research.

In 2000, he was recruited as CTO by OneEighty Software Ltd, a start-up developing virtual machine based platforms for embedded systems. The target platforms were cluster-like parallel systems.

Since 2004, he has been a consultant and given specialist training courses. He has written books on Developing Java Software and on Python and Groovy programming.

Russel Winder has a BSc in Physics (Sussex) and a PhD in Theoretical Physics (Liverpool). He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and a Member of the Institute of Physics. He holds chartered status in both institutions. He is also a Chartered Scientist and a Chartered Engineer.
